Customer Review :
Great and tough. Though not for colder weather. : Carhartt Men's Men's Waterproof Breathable Coat, Black, X-Large/Regular
I've owned and worn out a lot of Carhartt stuff in the last 15 years (many pairs of logger jeans and double knee pants, one arctic coat, one barn coat, adequate pocket T-shirts to make rags for oil changes straight through the next century). If you're reading this, you probably already know Carhartt makes great stuff that's reasonably priced for those of us who work for a living. After all, we need clothes to keep us alive while working covering in the winter in Wyoming, not clothes that make us look like the cast of "Jersey Shore."
That said, this is one of the best clothing items I've ever bought, Carthartt or not. It's reasonably priced and performs very well. I wanted a wind and water shell and shopped all over, seeing at the stuff from all the big name outdoor gear makers. Money was no object. Problem is those coats and jackets, even in Xl and Xxl sizes, are made for skinny metrosexual climber guys and they don't offer tall sizes for those of us with sleeve lengths longer than our inseams. It'd be great if we were all built like Matt Damon but that's just not the case. Don't get me wrong, the big names make great ability stuff that's very techy and sexy but they just don't get it done for this 6'2" 260-lb aging middle linebacker who likes to eat and needs to conceal a holstered pistol and spare mags.
I randomly found this coat and figured, hey, it's Carhartt, I've had a lot of Carhartt stuff over the years and it's survived working covering year round on drill rigs in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, why not? The price is right (it's China made, sadly) and it does what I need it to do. I called Carhartt and they said it's not windproof, but in my touch so far it's been just dandy for cutting winter winds out here on the high plains. With only a T-shirt and this coat I'm good to go until about frosty (even with the wind, see above) and a fleece jacket or hooded sweatshirt underneath gets it done until about 0. Any colder than that, I'm getting out my other Carhartt arctic coat. I can't speak for the waterproof qualities yet (this is a high desert, technically) but based on the other reviews I'm sure it'll hang.
This coat also looks a lot good than the usual Carhartt stuff, which is important since I have to dress up for work now. I like it so much I'm thinking of getting another one to replace my beater get-around Carhartt coat that gets me eyeballed by protection guards at Whole Foods (they think I'm a homeless guy seeing to do some dishes in the can I guess) and holding this one as my good coat for dressing up at work.
